The newly established university is one of the latest additions to the state of Assam's higher education landscape, having been established in September 2023. This significant development came about when the Assam government upgraded the former North Lakhimpur College to a state university. The former North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) had already carved out a distinguished reputation in the field of higher education in Assam. Notably, it was the first autonomous college in Assam and the second in the entire North East India region.
The Department of Physics at this institution was initiated in 1966, marking a pivotal moment in the institution's history. In 1976, the department introduced the BSc Honours course in Physics. Since its inception, the department has been at the forefront of physics education in the North East, producing over 400 graduates. The department introduced the MSc course in 2021. Furthermore, it is currently in the process of planning and preparing to launch Research Programs later this year.
